Immerse yourself in the rich history of Štanjel and indulge in the genuine wines of the castle's wine shop
The legends and stories of Štanjel come alive best in the company of the locals and with a glass of Karst wine.
At the Štanjel Castle Wine Shop, we will make a toast with premium wine, to which the Karst soil lends a tantalising flavour and edge.
Then the guide will unveil the secrets of the stone alleys and courtyards where the millennia-old stories of the Karst are tossed about by the Bora wind. We will walk past the Karst House, one of the oldest houses in Štanjel, which tells the story of the life of the local people in harmony with stone, the Bora wind and smoke trees. We will climb up to the Gledanica Archaeological Park, which served as an observation post of the lively activity of the settlement as long ago as in the Iron Age.
A special surprise is the advanced water supply system that ensured Štanjel’s drinking water supply in the past. This engineering feat is also the work of the outstanding architect and urban planner Maks Fabiani. The final stop is the terrace of Štanjel – the Ferrari Garden, which Fabiani put on the European map of architectural excellence in the 1920s and 1930s as part of the renovation of Villa Ferrari.
