Gledanica

Festival
On Sunday, 19 June 2022, Štanjel will host the Gledanica Festival, named after the prehistoric lookout found at the top of Turn Hill.

The colourful whole-day event in Štanjel includes workshops, guided tours of the village and the Sound Gallery, performances and interactive installations that will make this day in the pearl of the Karst very special and interesting.

10.00 onwards ~ Interactive installation “Play the bike!”

In the fusing together of the functional and the creative, entailing a balance between mechanical, analogue and digital, an idea was born about interactively upgrading an exercise bike, which the project mastermind has transformed into a perfect musical, i.e. sound, instrument. 

The audio content of this “sound bike” emphasises the musical tradition of Slovenia while combining sounds from the urban world and natural and digital environments ...

The bike is available for visitors for musical experimentation and fun.

10:00–19:00 ~ A wreath-making workshop

The local Venček society preserves the old folk tradition of making wreaths of St John. This custom is based on the popular belief that the plants picked hold a special superpower. The locals used to make wreaths with love and then hung them on their front doors to protect their homes from bad luck and to attract good luck. Find out more about this beautiful old Karst custom that is also listed in the Register of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Slovenia.

14:00–18:00 ~ Visit to the Kamenica Sound Gallery

Kamenica Sound Gallery

The Kamenica Sound Gallery is part of the innovative “THE SOUND OF STONE” project that entails merging the musical and sculpting arts. It is interactive – the sculptures are equipped with beaters so that visitors can generate sounds by themselves and HEAR THE STONE.

15:00–17:00 ~ Workshop on making ancient musical instruments “WHISTLE AND BE QUIET”

Under the guidance of a mentor, workshop participants will make an Istrian folk musical instrument from reed, called “nonola” or “nunalca”. Families with children are especially welcome because making a musical instrument is great fun for the whole family.

The number of places is limited. Advance registration not needed.

Organised by: Marino Kranjac, a folk musician, researcher, animator, pedagogue, musical instrument maker, artist who creates a musical world based on folk tradition.

16:00 ~ The “Through Štanjel through time” guided tour

Start in front of the castle courtyard

In the company of a local guide and Avik, a virtual boy from prehistoric times, you will journey through Štanjel through time. The journey will take you back to the long historical periods of Štanjel’s existence. You will discover the hidden stories of Štanjel that have been created by its inhabitants since prehistoric times, through the Roman period, the Middle Ages and the Modern Period up until today.

16:30 ~ “The Karst of the Dwarfs” guided tour

The Karst of the Dwarfs is a family adventure in Štanjel which takes children and parents alike on a journey into this wonderful Karst world. The original story entitled “The Dwarfs from the Karst”, written by Uroš Grilc and illustrated by Zvonko Čoh, is an eco-conscious story about mischievous dwarfs who play a trick on the villagers of Štanjel where everything is turned upside down. They hid dwarf seals throughout the “Karst of the Dwarfs” and cast magic dwarf spells all around. And now the Karst needs your help.

18:00 ~ An evening of the dialect kamishibai

Kamishibai narrators from different Slovenian regions will present kamishibai stories in their dialect.
