The Štanjel Castle Museum and Lojze Spacal Gallery

The museum at Štanjel Castle brings together the experience of the Karst landscape and its distinctive features, the history of the Slovenian language, and outstanding artistic creativity. Here, nature, heritage and artistic expression are intertwined, shaping the Karst's distinctive character over time.

The Nature and Man in the Karst exhibition offers a comprehensive sensory experience of the Karst landscape. Touch the stone, feel the Bora wind in the wind tunnel, and discover how natural conditions have shaped the lives of the people living here and the area's cultural landscape!

The Museum of Slovenian Language and Books guides visitors through the evolution of the Slovenian language, exploring its various forms and unique characteristics. Interactive displays present the key milestones in the language’s history, highlighting the roles of education, books, sign language and Braille along the way.

The museum experience is complemented by three panel exhibitions – Men of Language, Reformers in Comics, and A Kiss with Language. Together, they explore the emergence of the Slovenian language, the Reformation period, and the development of grammars and dictionaries.

Another important part of the castle complex is the Lojze Spacal Gallery, dedicated to the artist who depicted the Karst and Istria in a distinctive and original way. His unique artistic style, particularly his use of graphic techniques, establishes him as one of the most notable artists of his time. The permanent collection is complemented by temporary exhibitions. Until 10 January 2027, the One Thing is Sacred: Simple and Genuine exhibition is on display. This exhibition is a tribute to Srečko Kosovel on the 100^th anniversary of his death, and a dialogue with the visual artists Lojze Spacal, Vladimir Makuc, and Valentin Oman.
