The local “Venček” society preserves the old folk tradition of making wreaths of St John. This custom is based on the popular belief that the plants picked hold a special superpower. The locals used to make wreaths with love and then hung them on their front doors to protect their homes from bad luck and to attract good luck. Find out more about this beautiful old Karst custom that is also listed in the Register of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Slovenia.

The Kamenica Sound Gallery
The stone is not only an aesthetic or visual element, nor is it only a source of sound; it is a visual-sound synergy, as the project combines sculpture and musical art, opening new paths in the field of visual art and music. The sculptor and the percussionists explored and spent a great deal of time in the quarries and the studio, searching for the sound of stone. The results are fascinating. The Kamenica Sound Gallery is part of the innovative “THE SOUND OF STONE” project that entails merging the musical and sculpting arts. It is interactive – the sculptures are equipped with beaters so that visitors can generate sounds by themselves and HEAR THE STONE.

AT 15.00 ~ “THE POWER OF STONE” PERFORMANCE
The Kamenica Sound Gallery
The Power of Stone is an audio story about people who lived with nature and believed in the power of stones. With the narrator’s words and the sounds of unusual musical instruments, we will go back to the time when people lived according to old-faith customs in the areas around the Idrijca and Soča rivers. Each young spectator is given two pebbles on arrival; they use them as musical instruments during the performance and co-create the music. Have you ever heard what a stone sounds like?

Under the guidance of a mentor, workshop participants will make an Istrian folk musical instrument from reed, called “nonola” or “nunalca”. Families with children are especially welcome as making a musical instrument is great fun for the whole family. And if everyone makes their own instrument, you can make music together.
The number of places is limited. Advance registration not needed.

The bullroarer is a sound toy used by children all over Slovenia. It consists of a long narrow piece of wood and a long string tied through a hole at its narrow end. The bullroarer is held by the string and spun in a circle in the air, producing a strong buzzing sound.

Start of the tour: Square between the church and the castle courtyard
The guide will unveil the secrets of the stone alleys and courtyards where the millennia-old stories of the Karst are tossed about by the Bora wind. We walk through Štanjel, past the Karst House, up to the Gledanica Archaeological Park, and the final stop is the terrace of Štanjel – the Ferrari Garden, which Fabiani put on the European map of architectural excellence in the 1920s and 1930s as part of the renovation of Villa Ferrari. The tour ends in the Štanjel Castle Wine Shop, where we will make a toast with premium wine, to which the Karst soil lends a tantalising flavour and edge.
